have been fighting a war of attrition with the
laundry room. Since I arrived at college this
year, three shirts, two pairs of shorts, one pair
of pants, the mattress pad for my bed, and an
unknown number of socks have gone to the place
where clothes go to die. Unfortunately, I don't
know where that is.
Even now that I have several sudsin' safety strategies,
laundry is always risky business. It took me a
while to realize that the laundry room at college
is a far more hostile environment than the laundry
room at home. As such, different tactics must
be used. I can only hope that by learning from
my misfortune, yours may be averted.
When
I first arrived at college, I considered myself
a laundry hot-shot. I knew all the rules: Check
your pockets, don't overdry garments, don't put
red clothes in with other colors, and remember
to add detergent. I had been doing my laundry
at home for several years, and I thought I was
pretty much untouchable. It didn't take long for
me to be humbled, however.
