Now that you're on your own, it's not likely mom and dad will be paying your bills, especially sky-high, long-distance phone charges you racked up. That's why you'll need a phone plan that suits both your phone needs and your financial abilities. But before you get stuck in a phone rut, check out these college-friendly phone plans, along with some hidden fees to avoid.

Dollar Digits Phone Facts Dialers Beware
Verizon Wireless America's Choice National Plan $35 300 monthly airtime minutes with no extra roaming or long-distance charges. You'll be charged 45 cents for each minute beyond the allowed amount.
Sprint PCS Free & Clear Plan $30 300 anytime minutes with nationwide long distance, as well as unlimited night and weekend minutes. Night and weekend calls are rated based on start time, and calls made even one minute before the set night and weekend times will cost you an additional 40 cents per minute if you're already over your allowed amount.
AT&T Wireless National Network Plan $35 Unlimited night and weekend minutes and 500 anytime minutes. You'll be charged an additional 40 cents for every minute past your set amount for night and weekend minutes. If you call outside the AT&T Wireless National Network, you'll be charged 20 cents for every minute, plus 69 cents for national roaming charges.

You've Got Options

If you're not ready to make a cellular commitment, there are other options. A long-distance calling card from Verizon will cost you 50 cents per minute, and can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Or, opt for a pre-paid phone package like AT&T's Free2Go Wireless, or Verizon Wireless Refill cards and prepaid services, which both allow you to control spending by paying as you go.
